The authors of a similar title about Europe (Innocents Abroad: Traveling with Kids in Europe, Plume, 1991), Sutherland and Deutsch began their present work as an informal sharing of inexpensive vacation spots with friends, places not mentioned in other travel guides. They offer a descriptive list of “the best for less” U.S. vacation spots for families. Their listing is divided by the type of vacation, from resorts to dude ranches, and then organized by geographic area. Each entry includes an evaluative description, season(s) available, accommodation information, special features, cost, and nearby attractions, if relevant. Appendixes include lists of budget motel chains and of U.S. tourist offices. An important addition to public libraries.?Alison Hopkins, Queens Borough P.L., N.Y.

5 Stars AWESOME!
Absolutely loved it! Very informative. Plenty of interesting places to try with my family, with varying amenities and prices for everyone. Glad to have stumbled across this.
5 Stars Lots of great ideas for family vacations
I really enjoyed reading the book The Best Bargain Family Vacations in the USA. At the advice of this book, my family and I just went to Family Camp at the Centerville Mills YMCA Camp in Bainbridge Township, Ohio, over Memorial Day weekend 1999. We arrived at 10 a.m. Saturday and left at noon Monday. The $75 per person fee included six meals, two nights lodging in a dorm style lodge room, a lot of horseback riding on lovely trails (they have over 150 acres of land), canoeing in the little lake, making tie dyed t shirts, archery, a hay ride, a campfire with s’mores, a night hike, other nature hikes, and swimming in the pool. My son loved shooting bb guns and fishing - the little lake is stocked with bluegills. My daughter loved the Rodeo Games, and, of course, the trail rides. I am looking forward to trying some of the other “Best Bargain Family Vacations in the U.S.A.” - this first one we tried was a real winner. Great book!

Budget Travel How To Travel to Great Places on a Low Budget

Traveling is seen as a luxury that can be afforded only by some and necessitates saving over several months in order to get the holiday that you want. This does not have to be the case. With a bit of careful thought and a lot of planning, it really is possible to travel on a budget.
Of course, traveling on a budget means different things to different people. Some would consider a budget holiday to involve backpacking and camping. This type of holiday can be done on a budget relatively easily; the real skill arises when you are trying to get a ‘luxury’ holiday for a budget price.
The Travel Industry Association of America estimated that the average family spends over $2,200 a year on an extended vacation. This is an enormous amount. If you save just 10% of that amount, think how it will add up over the years.
Interestingly, paying more does not necessarily guarantee you a better holiday. Whenever you are on vacation, you will probably be surrounded by other families, some of which have paid more than you for the vacation and others which have paid significantly less.
This book is all about learning to be one of those who sits smugly by the others declaring the ‘cheap’ vacation that they have managed to secure. It’s easier than you think!
